Pride Cup responds to comments by AFL CEO

Reports have emerged of AFL CEO, Gillon McLachlan, stating that there are currently gay players in the AFLM who are choosing not to come out publicly because of the “burden” they would face.

Pride Cup CEO, Hayley Conway, responds “It is the responsibility of the AFL to provide a safe work environment for all athletes.

“AFLM teams, Saint Kilda and Sydney Swans, and the AFLW have made a statement to their fans and community about their support for LGBTI+ inclusion through annual Pride rounds and education sessions.

“This is a chance for the AFLM to build on their legacy of inclusion. Pride Cup is ready to walk this journey with the AFL and other clubs to create safer environments for players to come out if they choose to. All professional players are role models, and that is a privilege not a burden”, concluded Ms Conway.
