Grace Wilson, goalkeeper for Adelaide United and the U20 Matildas has today shared with the world that they are non-binary.

In an interview with Holly Ransom, Pride Cup board chair, released today Wilson stated “My perception of gender doesn’t fit into the western standards of man and woman. Every non-binary person experiences this differently.”

“As a kid, I didn’t see that things were supposed to be for girls or for boys but I was taught that as I grew up.

“You don’t realise how much of a difference it makes. Being referred to as ‘they/them’ for the first time gave me this euphoric feeling.

In choosing to share their story, Wilson commented “I just wanted to be free”.

Pride Cup CEO, Hayley Conway, states “You can’t be what you can’t see, and Grace is showing today that there is a place for everyone in football.

“Just 6% of LGBTIQ+ people participate in sport because of homophobia and transphobia. This can and must change.

“Adelaide United are truly leading the way in creating the best possible environment for footballers.

“Hosting a Pride Cup, combining inclusion education with an iconic rainbow-themed PrideGame or PrideRound event activation, can reduce homophobia and transphobia within a sports club by 40-50%”, concluded Ms Conway.
